Sowerby Community Primary School is a warm, courteous and welcoming community. We aim to provide an excellent primary education for our children, focused on learning and raising achievement, where:

  • Every child and adult matters, they are listened to and involved.
  • Every child gets the best possible start in life, through the development of ever closer, positive relationships between parents and school.
  • Every child's family feels supported by us and, through our swift referral, a wide range of specialist services.
  • Every child's family has access to more family learning, with wider community access to adult learning.
  • Every child's physical and emotional needs are met.
  • Every child makes the best possible progress in reading, writing and mathematics, with teachers and support staff giving children more personalised learning based on good assessment and teaching.
  • Every child has access to a wider school curriculum, with the opportunity to learn a foreign language, play music and take part in sport.
  • Learning and achievement is everyone's business.

Every Child Really Matters

It is very important to us that every child is valued and that their own unique qualities are recognised.  We actively promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

We work hard to build trusting relationships with all children and families to ensure their engagement and enjoyment in every aspect of school life.  Children and families may experience a range of needs at different times in their lives.   We work together with many different agencies to support and to ensure individual needs are always catered for.

We believe that the environment we offer plays a crucial part in developing all our children into happy, healthy, safe and motivated learners.  Our calm, and purposeful atmosphere contributes greatly to the development of the whole child.  Sowerby Primary children are taught to make good choices, considering the impact upon themselves and others.

Teaching and Learning

Raising the attainment of children across all areas of the curriculum is central to our teaching.  We teach the full National Curriculum and take great care to enrich learning through both first hand and practical experience.  Through the provision of a broad and balanced curriculum we are able to develop and recognise individual talents and interests.  We are keen to develop our community's creative skills and their engagement in arts and cultural activities.  Educational visits and visitors to school both focus and widen the children's understanding of the topics we teach.  Children are encouraged to take active responsibility for their own learning.

All children, irrespective of their learning ability, are supported through an extensive range of strategies and activities.  Pupils are taught as individuals, in small groups and classes, and children's learning is assessed regularly so that support and challenge is given where appropriate.  In all year groups we monitor pupil progress, sharing this with the child and with their parents helping everyone to understand the next important steps in learning.

Community - Working Together

Parents are an important part of the community and the support they give us individually and through FOSS (Friends of Sowerby School) is highly valued.  Children achieve their best when home and school work well together and you will find us helpful, informative, supportive and friendly.

We work closely with our local community and are always looking for innovative ways of extending the range of opportunities we can offer our children.  We work in partnership with our local nurseries, primary schools, and secondary school.  We have developed educational links with our local organic farm and children experience a wide range of visitors, visits and residentials during their time with us.

The Foundation Stage (Ages 4-5)

Children have a great start to school in our Foundation Stage.  They have lots of fun in attractive, well resourced indoor and outdoor learning areas where they develop the skills they need to become effective learners.  In our play based curriculum we place a strong emphasis on developing basic skills in literacy and numeracy as well as children's personal, social and emotional development.

The Primary Stage (Ages 5-11)

During this important phase of their education, we build on the learning that has already taken place.  We seek to capture children's imagination, make learning real and relevant using our locality and through offering children glimpses of what the world has to offer.  We strongly promote personal wellbeing and healthy lifestyle choices, wanting children to become resilient, flexible and able to sustain positive attitudes to learning and life.

We hope this website gives you a flavour of our school community and we invite you to visit us and experience for yourself the happy and caring atmosphere of our school.
