Local Fire Fighters Visit
The local fire fighters took time out from their busy schedule to come to school this week. The children learned how a fire engine works and what duties a fire fighter has to entail on a day to day basis. Let's hope we have some budding fire fighters for the future!
The Year3/4 play, Midsummer Nights Dream
Yet another Sowerby School success. After weeks of hard work from the children, they yet again pulled out the stops to entertain the parents and guardians with a professional performance of Shakespeare's Midsummer Nights Dream. Here's just a taster to wet your appetite ...
Christmas Fair
The Christmas spirit has well and truly hit Sowerby School this week at the Christmas Fair with a special visit from Father Christmas! The queue to see him snaked down the corridor and into the hall with eager children waiting with anticipation. Amongst the bustle was stalls including tombola, raffle, and cake stalls. The Year 5 children sold their freshly made peppermint creams to raise funds for the school - delicious!
Christmas Lunch and Table Decorations
All the children have been looking forward to having their Christmas lunch at school this week. They have made some beautiful creative decorations for the hall which are awaiting to be judged for the school competition. Good luck judges - it's going to be difficult to choose a winner!

Food For Life Partnership Award
-
Our ever hard working pupils have won the silver prize in the Food For Life Partnership Awards recently.
-
With lots of hard work over recent years, our pupils have joined a gardening club where they grow fresh vegetables which they can harvest and eat for their school meals as well as planting their very own orchard.
-
We also have locally-sourced organic food for our school dinners and the pupils enjoy a cookery club.
-
Two pupils proudly took the award on behalf of the school, which was presented by the celebrity chef Brian Turner.
Brian commented," This is more than just an award ceremony. This is a celebration of schools who have succeeded in transforming their food culture.
"Young people in these schools are cooking, growing and eating fresh, seasonal, local and organic food, and reconnecting with the farms that produce their food. These youngsters and their parents are celebrating good food and best of all it’s giving them what will probably be some of the most enjoyable experiences of their school lives."
Mrs. Yendall commented, "We are delighted with our success at gaining the silver award for improving food culture in our school." She goes on to say, "The support from the Food For Life Partnership has been incredible and the way the parents, children and staff have embraced the change has been truly remarkable."
“Everything we try to do here is about making learning real and relevant. We have a link with an organic farm and the children grow food from seed. They supply their curly cabbage to the kitchen and we make delicious pumpkin soup from the pumpkins they grow. We want our children to make healthy choices and the way to do this is by helping them understand how food is produced and getting them out there and making it happen.
“We are delighted with our success at gaining the Silver Award from the Food for Life Partnership for improving food culture in our school and can’t wait to start working towards the gold!”
